I have not seen people suggesting someone to Join Service based as the last company to reach retirement...It can be very specific for TCS (which is true in case of any TATA group of companies ) or in some cases HCL. However In general it can be said that Service based are good to retire and there are few reasons behind that
1. Product Based Hire u on a comparatively good package..Gives u great hikes and over the years the resource become very expensive for them ..So these people can become the prime target in those rainy days. On the Other Hand, Doesn't matter on which package u join a service based , your hikes will be peanuts throughout ur life...and u won't become much expensive with growing inflation plus there will always be more expensive resources will always be joining the org with huge difference in CTCs.
2. Product based companies are usually dynamic in nature and everything is all about the product here. They grow when the product is in sync with market demand and continuously evolves itself..For this veey reason they are always in need of fresh mindset , people from diverse backgrounds , people who are open to new technologies and rapidly changing demands. This is done by hiring fresh graduates, laterals and restructuring the current roles and making some roles redundant by various methods. Service Based on the other side have most of the projects as support projects, technologies many of the times are old, outdated and work is very monotonous. U will become great resource once after building a rapport with the client..but given above reasons the learning and growth curve will not be steeper here( Now u can understand the reason of those 2% - 4% hikes in service based and 20%-30% hike in product based ) and since there are many such projects with them its easy to place resources and hence a good amount of job security.
P:s:- Above does not imply that Product Based companies are not safe in terms of Job security...there are many product based companies which are way more safer than any service based in India.
Thank you so much for the detailed explanation.
