Hired contractor to do project on my basement. He came and did half a day of work which just entailed making measurements, putting down chalk lines, then left. Since then there have been excuses why he hasn't been able to come back. He always answers texts promptly when asking about the plan. Today I asked for my $6500 deposit back. No response. This is at a vacation house six hours from where I live. What would you do?

Contractor has said he will give me $5k back. That's a less expensive lesson than the alternative. We shall see if he follows through. He wanted money up front to buy materials. Work was supposed to be completed by December 12 per the contract

What does your contract say as far as timeline and payment schedule? If they are in violation, then call them out on it.

Is this contractor licensed and bonded? If so, bring it up to the licensing board. If not… your money is probably gone

Often the reason why I don’t agree to give a big deposit until they actually show up to do some work. But contractors are always like this, probably juggling multiple projects at once. If they are well rated and reviewed etc. they will show up at some point just need to be patient and work with their schedules pretty much.

Just charge back from your bank or credit card

Hi Fishes - real estate investing newbie here. My level of knowledge is essentially at the rich dad / poor dad level. Any recommendations for best books to read / best YouTube channels to follow to get deeper knowledge? If it helps, I live and hence will probably invest in the NY/NJ area… TYIA!

Due to a family situation we are looking to move to a different state. Normally we would sell our current home and buy a new home in our new location. However, with todays prices and interest, will it make more sense to rent out our current home and rent a home ourselves vs. selling and buying immediately when we move? We are moving from Vegas to Sacramento and we are not sure how long we would stay in the new area. Thoughts?
