Good design skills welcomed anywhere. I know D/McK folk at Google. Most had a life before consulting so likely part of a wider story.
It is difficult to make the jump from design consultancy to a product shop - especially at a more senior level. Because a lot of projects in a design consultancy aren’t actualized, there isn’t as much experience with developers or a consumer facing product. If you’re at a junior to mid level, it’s possible to make the jump. Make sure you staff yourself to digital product projects rather than design strategy
At product companies it can be seen as a bad thing. We don’t tend to be around to run through the cycles of build/measure/learn that is a different skill set than designing to please clients.
I think being in a consulting environment primes one for large corporate environments. In large corporations design teams behave more similar to design consultants.
@DD4, which office did the UX SC going to Google leave from?
I have spent almost 10 years in startups and the past 4 in consulting. It was a pretty big adjustment for me. I really enjoy it these days though.
Everyone I know in product / design roles at mck is being approached by google right know - but per comments above, all have prior experience... it’s a pretty standard route for generalists
The experience is totally different, not about being smart

One of our UX senior managers was offered a position at Google sf. Canada to sf move. Good for him
^ that’s the only case I know too
It can be done, just round yourself out by not being a consulting lifer. It literally is a totally different ball game. Not harder or easier just different .
What do you think are the benefits of being a design consultant vs a designer?
How do you define design consultant?
Being a designer within a consultancy rather than for specific brand or product
One of our UX SCs just left to Google sf.
Looks like there are a couple of them at google now. One even made up a UX title at DD that I am pretty sure doesn’t exist.
