How are the ladies on this bowl doing their hair? I love to leave my braids down, but I sometimes I sense a feeling that people don't consider it a professional hairstyle...

Do you, girl. They’ll get used to it.
I wear my hair however I want. I’m just as likely to wear cornrows to work as any other hair style. If it makes you feel beautiful and confident, that’s enough.

Haha that's right! Thanks for sharing your thoughts

I wear my hair how I like too. For the past couple of years I’ve been silk pressing it myself because of an awesome blow dryer I purchased, so mostly down or in ponytails or buns. However, I also wear my natural curls (and my hair is BIG when curly) I’ve worn braids and boho twist. Currently, I am doing my natural curls in a big ponytail. I love the big huge curly hair though! It gets looks!!!!

like

What's the blow dryer??

like

Don’t overthink it - just do whatever you want. I go to work with a twist out in power buns, Afro puff pigtails, waist length box braids, twists, silk presses, and sometimes a scarf if the situation is grotesque. The only negative comment I have received is from another black female attorney saying that she felt my hair didn’t look “grown up.” It gave me jealousy vibes and until someone that signs my paycheck says something I’ll continue to rock whatever style works.

YES MA'AM! :D

I actually just had this conversation last weekend because I have braids now and I’m in BigLaw, and my mom was worried. I think as long as everything looks neat and any you feel fly don’t worry about it too much. However, I will say on client zoom calls I always pull them back neatly and don’t wear them down or in a top bun. I don’t wear them down to work in part because I want them out of my face when I’m working. A few of the old school partners gave me some looks, but I think with my seniority no one cares. Now for a job interview, I’ll take them out (at least until I land the job and work there for a few months).

like

Thanks for the detailed response. Yeah, you're right about the zoom call stuff - you have one window to represent yourself, might as well be as presentable as possible

like

I have locs. I usually just wear them down. I’m thinking of dyeing it auburn/brown for the summer 😬

Do it!!

I went natural and later locked my hair in or about 2000. A friend told me I would never get a job again. I was special counsel at a midsized national firm. I am now an equity partner at a large national full service firm. It’s about your skill set not your hair. If we continue to allow others to dictate how we show up, it just continues from decade to decade.

I have locs and usually do two strand twists

Nice*

Same as above. I’ve always worn my hair however. I now rock my microlocs, which are still in transition as I’m only 7 months in. Maybe something is wrong with them for not wearing their hair down in braids 🤔.

like

Hahah. 7 months! Nice

I wish I could do braids or just wear my natural curls. I don’t feel comfortable in anything except straight hair. I notice people treat me differently depending on how I look. One time a partner even told me to turn off my camera on a zoom call. So now I always wear straight. I’d love to hear any tips on how to get over this fear

Single black female. Late 30s, no kids. Is it better to practice in a smaller market that’s close to major cities, lots of professional opportunities, but no real single professional scene? OR be in a bigger pond/major city with more professional and networking opportunities, oversaturated with lawyers of color, more competition for professional opportunities, but bigger dating pool?

I'm a younger plaintiff's side attorney (31). Does anyone else feel like white attorneys give you a particularly harder time? Like unreasonably denying clear facts, or trying to fish for a way to sanction you? Usually it's solo defense attorneys that get extreme with it, but I've seen some questionable stuff from BigLaw too. Hopefully I'm not the only one.

Someone on LinkedIn expressed disappointment about the lack of diversity from the big law firms in TX that were posting pics of their summer associates. A managing partner commented that he thought the post might be about a pic he posted (12/14 SAs were white). He tried to defend this by saying that they had LGBT and socioeconomic diversity. The fact that he recognized that his pic might be part of the problem says it all. Law firms need to do better. Sorry, I just wanted to rant.

I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.
