It's hard to say without knowing what type of neighborhood you're looking for. These are a little bit less central, but generally pretty chill: inner sunset, outer sunset, inner Richmond, outer Richmond, West Portal.
Born and raised in SF and second this. Outer Richmond may be a bit far from downtown via Public transport though
If looking in Sunset, look for a place easily walkable to the L or N train

I found persidio & laurel heights to be safe and pleasant growing up
Lol don’t do lower nob hill. That’s code for tenderloin.
Hayes Valley has some nice new buildings. But I’d honestly suggest getting a non building apartment for a proper SF experience. My picks:
To walk: try Russian hill or north beach.
Subway: Mission (stick to the 24th street stop. Although there still is some crime)
Biking distance but no subway (busses though): Lower Haight, NOPA, Cole Valley, Inner Richmond.
It’s wonderful here.
Pac heights is also a good option
I live in Lower Pack Heights, and it's safe. The Castro and Duboce triangle are good too. All 3 are right on major transportation lines, so commutes are short to the FiDi.
