Do it. Form a union, I’ll join.
As others have said, there are many threads on this topic around fishbowl.
Generally speaking, unions are formed in industries and workplaces where there isn’t a path for labor to move into management. Not to mention the ability to negotiate directly with employers, rather than collectively with colleagues, generally benefits us.
Things like overtime would be nice to have but since what we do is closer to consulting and considered knowledge work, it just isn’t easy to to standardize or measure
You would essentially need a majority at a certain level to buy in (junior/senior). Not just at your shop. Industry wide.
Anyone seen as management (ACD and up) wouldn’t be eligible. Regardless of whether you can hire or fire people. None of us can actually do that on our own, but hey, thems the rules.
The real obstacles are the agencies. They see everyone as expendable. So if you try to pull anything in your favor, they can easily toss you out and find someone else willing to take your job.
Trust me. There is always someone ready to take your job. Even if you think that job totally sucks.
You’d also need anyone coming into the industry to buy in. It would take at least a decade to shift the power structure and drive any meaningful change.
I don’t think it would ultimately work though. The agencies that we know of today would buckle under the pressure. Client demands wouldn’t be met. Clients would fire agencies and bring the work in house. Your agency and your job would no longer exist.
It’s nice to dream though, isn’t it?
The union model doesn't really work for fields that are considered creative. I'm sure people have thought of it before, and the fact that it doesn't exist in advertising indicates that it wasn't practical. Maybe something like the screenwriters guild would be a model to base one on, but even that doesn't really align.
