How common is it for a secondment to become a permanent transfer?

I’m based in the EU and was offered an L-1A transfer to the US, but both firms have mentioned this is a 1-year secondment. HR said any extension depends on client demand in US after the first year. My wife has also secured a job in the US and will be moving as my dependent, so we’re trying to gauge how realistic a longer-term stay is. Curious to hear others’ experiences.

If a partner asked you to do non-client related/may help later work, how long is too long to get back to them? Came to big law as a second year from a smaller firm (three years out). First year (who should be a second year) is emailing me trying to figure out where are things with a federal notice summary (I allowed them to help). Can I tell the first year to chill? I feel like if the partner needed it ASAP, they would have said so. I turned in the summary less than 72hrs later. Nbd/big deal?

A client is discreetly asking me if I can join them as an employee. Should I report this to my manager? If I take up this offer will there be any repercussions?

How are the Data Science projects at IBM? I’ve heard they are loosing out on Data Science project contracts and the ones that are there are mostly support projects.

Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role?
