Networking and preparing case interviews. Also would require slight down-leveling for the new learning curve
Networking- all about that smile
Believe in yourself, or nobody else will
Are there any hard skills to learn apart from case study prep? I’m also interested in moving to strategy consulting (coming from ERP implementation work)
You'll have difficulty doing that at IBM, very very small pure strategy teams. Network your way to a different firm and you'll have much better luck
do i need actual experience or is networking legitimately it?
No strategy firm will give you a shot if you don’t have a track record of already doing strategic things
1) seek oops in your current job or a new job that require complex problem solving (pretty much strategy). You might not be doing pure start work, but at least some things will translate.
2) learn to write about those experiences in the language of the employer you hope to have (i.e., use the language of their job description).
3) tailor said story to your resume and your behavioral answers; ensure you include your individual contribution and impact
4) get a referral from someone you know; strangers on fishbowl can be nice, but remember that we have to write a long paragraph as to why you would be a good fit
5) Case, drill weaknesses.
