How do people in tax handle the work? The work seems mind numbing and boring, are you really passionate about taxes? What's drives you to go to work everyday and not go crazy?

I feel the same way about audit. Half the job is to literally redo someone else's work.

Been doing taxes for 20+ years and never find it boring. Every return is a peek into somebody else's life and there is great job satisfaction taking a huge pile of documents (sometimes 500+) and converting it to a return. And then telling the owner how a change here & there could help them save a fortune. Try it some time!

And sometimes not even redo it... just find it other places and put tickmarks everywhere. It's so dumb

like

If it were truly so mindnumbing, a robot would be doing it by now. We have to analyze a trial balance to determine, based on our knowledge of GAAP and tax law, it there should be a book/tax adjustment. If anything, it is a brain exploding job rather than mind numbing.

I find tax to be like a puzzle. It always keeps me on my toes and thinking about why a certain number is being pulled to a particular line, then how I can change it in the software. I dabble in audit too and that's pretty much SALY which is boring as hell.

like

There mind numbing aspects and there are good aspects. Documenting audit of a provision? Boooooooring. Trying to understand what happened and what adjustments are there on an audit? Interesting. The company purchased someone? Interesting. Loss company tax return with no real tax activity? Boring. Prepare a provision from scratch? Interesting.

Took me on three different assignments to Paris, London & Singapore...Does audit do that? Seriously, I don't know what audit does, I'm a JD/LLM, hence tax was my only option.

Tax question - I make about $200k and get half of my income from a W-2 and another half from being an independent contractor. Because, I’m subject to pay both FICA and SECA taxes. Do my social security taxes get capped on amounts paid above the ~$140k threshold across both my W-2 and 1099 incomes or am I out of luck and have to pay more than that since only about 100k of my income is FICA and the other 100K is SECA (which is subject to ~12% overall including the ER portion)?
