I’ve always told you need to find something to retire to, not retire from
You need to find fulfilling things to do. Volunteer with a youth group, find a new hobby to learn and improve at, etc. if you fill everyday with Netflix, you will not be happy
Fitness (cycling, running, weights), gardening, beekeeping, classic car restoration, home remodeling, visit every national park, help a charity, read the classics, read the Bible, learn to play an instrument. Maximize time with your spouse and children, and if your lucky, grandchildren. My kids participated in an activity during college that was rewarding to attend and volunteer with. That helped bridge the transition.
All of this minus classic cars lol. To each their own!
Is it really true that you can run out of things to do?! I am in the same age group and considering retiring as well. I’ve been on garden leave for 6 months but barely get through any on my list due to various reasons. It feels like it would take at least 3-5 years to get through my bucket list items. Have you considered volunteering or documenting your family’s genealogy and history?
With the advancement of AI, I’d like to make AI generated films and explore agritech ideas as hobbies after retirement. It feels like those two things would keep me busy for a few years.
I'm a bit younger, but in the same boat--hit my FIRE goal last year and have been on a sabbatical for 7 months.
Passion projects, exercise, coaching youth sports, trying my hand at writing fiction, and doing a whole lot of reading is how I'm filling my day when I'm not doing family stuff.
Congrats! Please keep us posted on
I plan on exercise, golf, and learning how to cook better as my ways to fill my days.

Get a hobby.
Can I ask what was on your list and how much spend you have?
my sister and brother in law retired in 2023. both were early 50s. i's put them at betwenn $15M to $20M when they retired. They left the u.s a month after retirement and have not been back. All i see are the amazing countries they traveled to on social media. Last time i talked to them, they dont plan on coming back lol. They sold their million dollar house, cars, everything. Seems like the good life is overseas. i cant wait to follow. hahaha.
me? no. them, yes. two. both working for google.

You have a year of PTO. Wow, who do you work for?
I would probably volunteer for a few organizations where you can still “work” but entirely on your own terms as much as possible, and mix in hobbies, etc
Nearly everyone requires social interaction and stimulation. Relaxed leisure gets boring too, and your mind will deteriorate.
Removing money as a requirement should allow you to shape things best
Sounds euro
Thanks for the overwhelming response. I should put some context on this post. My grievance is limited to 9-5 or also known as normal working hours.
1. No one to play with 😎. My social circle are happily or sadly filling this timeslot with so call working.
2. Missus is happily working. Travel is limited to her ability to take time off. Home is her kingdom (especially kitchen and pantry 🤤). Working spaces/room becomes territorial claim.
3. I don’t have long bucket list - All approved house DIY done and non approved is considered sovereign violation (see 2).
3. Learn hard way, you cant travel single in shoestring as 20+ (think of hostel and backpacking). Your body may have acquire certain level or comfort and the need to deal with certain uncomfortable look and questions.
4. Lastly, what I miss the most is the social interaction (on top of groceries shopping or cafe) especially the intellectual stimulation (not that I get a lot in work in the recent year) and there is no thrill in skirting during work hours (long lunch, too many coffee break, take taking time off/sickie or quick dose in the hidden corner 🤪).
This is could be just me whining that I don’t find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. For sure, I don’t miss the after hour teams work call, email, teams msg, deadline, weird colleagues, bosses, vendor, customer to deal with.
Get in incredible shape. Take up boxing. Pit yourself against another human in combat.
If you're already in incredible shape take up World of Warcraft.
