Honey... You're not that important. Sorry to break it to you. Whatever you had planned for the day can be either rescheduled or delegated to someone else on the team to handle. If you're sick, take time to get better.
You don't?
While no help for now, work to staff your team and teach them so that someone can step in for you either when you’re sick or on vacation.
Go home shut off laptop. Write out of office message and tell supervisor. Done.
The fact that you believe your team is incapable of being effective without you makes me think you're probably an awful manager to work for. Take this as an opportunity to step back and have some faith in the smart capable people working for you to figure shit out.
I think I’ve only called in sick once and I had a team member who could cover for me. I find it difficult to call in sick not because the work can’t wait but because I have to reschedule so many meetings. It’s almost less of a pain to just work and feel like shit than deal with rescheduling.
If you haven’t set up a plan for someone to take over for you in case of an emergency, you’re screwing up
EY2 I personally prefer to have a call with the team & client, then pass out and remain offline for the day if I'm truly that sick.
For me, having a couple of five minute calls in the morning is just easier than going back and forth over email all day. Perhaps I've been fortunate, but my clients leave me alone after that AM call and my team is good about documenting everything that happens while I'm away.
Is there a specific deadline you have to meet? Any flexibility in extending due dates? Unless the client is inhumane, there is usually some flexibility. Are we talking fed or reg deadlines?
Tell the team you're feeling ill. Do phone/email check-ins. Delegate tasks where you can.
Tell your client you're feeling ill and staying home but will reachable via phone/email. Identify a team member or one of your partners that can address any matters if you're not reachable
Also add that managers who work through significant illness teach their team members that they must do the same. Bad examples perpetuate a negative culture.
M2 - I disagree with phone work if you are very sick. Sometimes fully resting is the only cure.
The only time I ‘called in sick’ in my 20 years of professional life was when i had violent food poisoning and literally couldn’t leave my hotel room.
D3 - such a hardo... you aren’t that important.
