How do you go about negotiating a signing bonus? My practice group is hot and there’s tons of recruiter emails daily.

Get comparable offers from competitor firms and bid up. Poke around to see if you can see what people in your class year are generally getting in your area for your practice group

“Thanks so much for the opportunity. Just so I can properly consider your offer when deciding, I wanted to ask if you were offering any signing incentives or bonuses. I just want to make sure I consider the whole offer when making my decision.”

This would be a weird email to send since there would be an offer letter, spelling out the terms of the offer. I’d also find it odd that the associate who knows there isn’t a signing bonus, doesn’t just ask for one and does so in this passive, back door way. “Did you leave out the signing bonus from the offer letter?” If you want a signing bonus, get more than one offer. If you only get one offer, ask the firm explicitly for a signing bonus, letting them know you are still deciding between their firm and staying where you are. Happy to provide further advice on this if you DM me

Congratulations. What practice group are you in? I’m curious about which groups are hot right now. Thank you!

So which practice groups are actually quite hot these days?

Recently got a signing bonus. The firm recruiter asked me if I have any bonus needs lol

like

As did I - good luck

like

It should be included in your offer letter so I would not raise until you have an offer letter.

Most groups offer 10-15K. Earlier this year, I received my offer and shot back I wanted 75K and they gave me 80K (never requested to see comps). I am a senior associate in a niche hot area.

I agree with you but signing bonuses are not commonplace

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!

I have many options to consider but two options below are what I’m thinking of right now.

I want to see your thoughts on which one I should pick.

Job A: Project Engineer. 135K/yr base. 10% signing bonus.

Job B: Senior Project Manager. Contract. $60/hr standard. $90/hr overtime.

👉Just ask for it. Really, you would be surprised. Might be easier to switch to a new company and ask. I did that 3 years into my career.

And 🛑 wasting your time at a company that under-values you severely. Sometimes switching companies every 2 years or so will allow you to keep raising the bar for yourself.

I was approached on LinkedIn for an early career recruiting role in DFW, TX. I don't have direct experience, but I have the university experience/connections from working in career services. This is the first time I've considered work outside of higher education. I said my salary expectations are minimum $90k and that didn't seem to be an issue. Am I asking too little, too much? How can I know I'm getting the best salary and not just settling at the low end of the range?

And you don't need to be uber wealthy to regain control of your time.
