Advice needed - boyfriend has almost 3.5 years of finance experience at a bank. Interviewed for PwC valuation senior associate and now recruiter says they want to hire him at “experienced associate” because he has no valuation experience. Is this too big of a step backwards in career? Should he push back and see if it gets him anywhere? If he does accept Associate, is it reasonable to ask for written, definitive timeline (1 year?) for promo to Senior upon meeting standards? Help!

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say you were hoping for middle of the advertised pay range ($142.5k), but you’d be willing to accept $140k.
That shows you have rationale behind the number, you’re not being greedy, and you’re potentially willing to accept slightly lower than midrange.

It’s rare a (reasonable) counter offer will cost you the position
If they pass on the offer because of a counteroffer, you probably don’t want to work there long term anyway
Go for it- use your experience to support the pay you’re asking for. What you want is still in the range of what they are offering for the position so i don’t see why it would be a problem.
