My favorite responses are the following. Keeps it professional. Keep in mind that this depends on who is asking you to take on more work. If it’s your direct boss, I would meet them or email them making them aware of the tasks you are working on and perhaps asking them what they would want you to prioritize.
1. I think [Name/Department] might be better equipped to help with this. Let me connect you with them.
2. This sounds like a great initiative, but I’m currently focused on [whatever you are working on]. I wouldn’t be able to give this the attention it deserves.
3. I can’t assist directly, but you might consider [guide them to resource/tool] to help with this.
4. I’d love to help, but my schedule is packed right now. Could we revisit this in [like..never. Just kidding, I would give a specific time]?
Hope this helps!
Awwwwwe such wondrous responses. I can tell you are management. Just be the jerk your employees know you already are, what’s the use in hiding it???? 😊😊😊
One must not take sides. The reminder as always to all employment opportunities is teamwork makes the dream work and sometimes a little reminder goes a long way.
I totally feel you on this! My go-to is framing it as redirecting: “This isn’t in my wheelhouse, why don't you pass it along to X?” Or I ask for prioritization: “I’d love to help, but I’m at capacity—can we discuss what takes precedence?” I'd say it's most important to keep it polite but set boundaries at the same time. The key is not overexplaining, I've learned
I have gotten really good at just saying no. I have built a good relationship with my bosses and they trust that I will say no when I can't take on anything extra and need to focus on just my job duties. You may just have to be honest with them and let them know you don't have time.
Just say no. If someone can’t take it, it’s not your problem.
