How do you reply when a recruiter/interviewer asks you what you're making at your current role? I'm interviewing for a lateral move and was taken aback by this question. Doesn't feel like something they need to know about.

i always inflate if they ask

like

Just flip it to them. Literally say, “you know it’s not in my best interest to answer that but I get that you need to ask. How about you let me know the range of the role and I’ll let you know if it’s in line with my expectations.”

like

In lot of states it’s illegal to ask how much you’re making. I would usually reply by saying “at this stage in the process I really would like to focus on what the role is what value can I bring. Based on my online research am confident that you’ll extend a competitive offer”

but i dont understand why u wouldnt want to share. i always do when asked and most times it saves me time cuz they be like we cant afford that and im like ok bye.

I really want to:

Any struggling paralegals here? Do you feel like your financial situation is affecting your productivity at work? I like the work I do but the pay really sucks. I feel like the fear of not being able to pay some bills on time is affecting my productivity. I’ve asked for a raise but that may not still cut it, and idk if that will go through or not.

Had an Excel assessment yesterday as the second to last step in an interview process. I was using a new computer and long story short, had some technical difficulties (or maybe just my own incompetence under stress) and ended up only getting through half of the test. I’m on the fence about emailing my recruiter and explaining the circumstances/asking for a retest. Don’t want to come off like I’m complaining but also don’t want this to be the reason I don’t move forward. Any advice appreciated…
