You say so much when you say nothing at all. Ignore them or risk being labeled an a-hole for being honest. Unfortunately that’s the world we live in.
Thank you, this is good advice and perspective.
Just say you’ll “be happy to forward it along” but they “should know it’s a really bad time in the industry and with recent layoffs and salary freezes, I haven’t heard of any new hiring.”
Tell them. If not they will spend a long time being rejected for roles. Ask Chapt how to make it sound professional.
Yes, Marketing Project Manager III, some people do need mentoring.
I say: “Thanks for sharing, I’ll pass it along if I see anything pop up that seems like a good fit. Good luck!”
That way, I’m not lying. I have actually one time passed along a “bad book” to a smaller print shop that was looking for a junior production assistant. Not sure if they got the job, but it was technically a good fit for them.
I would be honest. Maybe youll hurt their feelings, maybe you’ll be seen as an a*hole. But youre doing them a kindness in the long run. Which takes real integrity!
If their work isnt there, they should know.
Theyll appreciate it in the future.
I find silence the most polite way to reject someone and my prefered method to receive bad news.
Can you be direct but kind: Your book doesn’t have the kind of work that the team tends to respond to…
When they ask what they do like, you can be as aggressive or not as you prefer.
Probably. But if you’re in and they’re not, it’s justifiable that you might know more about what they’re looking for.
But that’s just one way to do it. Essentially, you don’t want to say what’s wrong with their book, just what it’s not.
Could I send you mine for review?
