How does one go about preparing for, applying to and doing well at general counsel jobs? I’m a senior in house counsel and looking to get to the next level and take on a leadership role. Also battling impostor syndrome - I think many of us hold ourselves back. Are there any GC boot camps, books, training programs, coaching, mentorship programs and anything else that could help take me to the next level?

Barker Gilmore did a webinar on this recently. Should be on their website.

Assoc of Corp Counsel regularly has presos on this from the Annual Meeting.

Sterling Miller's "Ten Things" blog

Ben Heineman's book: The Inside Counsel Revolution

Tech GC and Tech GC-X have regular discussions on this as well.

I don’t know of any third party programs but the thing that always helps me is when our GC is on vacation and I have to assume all her responsibilities. It’s good experience and helps shake off the imposter someone. So, I guess, is your boss taking any extended time off soon? I feel this isn’t very helpful, sorry.

Good question. I think you have to look at the GC position. That is, not all GC positions are the same. Do you need to navigate public filings? Do you need to help grow customers and be a Strong contractor/negotiator? How broad do your skills need to be? What kind of team can you pull together or outside help can you have to support you? Point being, skills have to match the job profile and vice versa. If you’re looking at “too big” of a job, then you’ll feel out of league. Look for the right fit.

Also, I ACC and Top Ten in A1’s post are great resources.

ACC has a boot camp too (I haven’t taken it though), and their resource library and CLEs have been very helpful.

Been working for a F100 FMCG company in an accounting role but with some analysis work.

I always wanted to work on more "strategic/commercial areas" of finance.

Out of the blue, I got an offer for a Corp Dev role in a small niche F500 company.

Googling, it seems Corp Dev is usually for ex bankers...I'm concerned if I take the role, I'll be putting myself in a corner/dead end unable to get future corp dev roles- as I came from BIG4 audit with zero banking exp.

Would you take the chance?

I recently quit my stable job with a large finance company to go to a smaller company working with a friend as I felt I wasn’t being challenged and appreciated. However, the true environment of work was misrepresented with this new role and I find myself working long hours and I’m feeling burned out with less than 6 months in. My manager is fully aware of the pressure I’m feeling. Should I hang in there and hope it gets better or start looking?

Looking for honest feedback on whether in-house provides that W/L balance more often than not (I'm not opposed to the occasional late nights or urgent assignments, but it's too regular where I'm at now). I know it's YMMV.
