Was it tone deaf? Or did you not like it? AE ran a high profile new campaign that generated a lot of interest in the brand and got people searching and buying. This is good news.
I didn’t like it — it reminded me of the old Brooke Shields ad and I’ve always thought that ad was gross — but I also thought the controversy was overblown. That said, I had no idea American Eagle was still around before the controversy so the hype probably served them well.
Misstep??!!! It was a brilliant move and people loved it! The woke train is over thank god!!
American Eagle would like to personally thank you for helping their stock rise

Because the people who considered this tonedeaf are an absolute minority. And the days this vocal minority had the power to make brands apologize is definitely over. People don’t take them seriously anymore.

You’re right, thanks for this great analysis.
I did get the impression that OP was implying it’s offensive to celebrate someone as objectively attractive as the actress. Why else frame this cover as the ‘antidote’ and call it a kind of progress that’s now lost? That said, only OP can really clarify their intent.
Other than that, I agree. The real shift began when people stopped accepting basic biological facts, like the link between obesity and health risks. And when anyone questioning those narratives started getting labeled with some form of ‘-ism,’ that’s when logic was pushed aside. That’s also when they began to lose the support of the general public.
Could be that the majority of the country isn’t terminally online.
Very scientific conclusion
I can give you two good reasons….
Perhaps it was not a misstep. Perhaps it contributed to the companies Q2 earnings beating expectations. Perhaps this is an example - opinions aside - of what one might call a “successful ad campaign”. This outcome is what clients expect from advertising campaigns.
Because it wasn’t offensive and the people who made a big deal out of it turned it from a mediocre ad that you would normally just skip past to an “omg everyone is talking about it” ad.
Anyone who took it as white supremacist is a mental midget.
The vast minority of people who actually think like QAA are exactly the reason why the stock skyrocketed. The average person is just sick of this nonsense and have been for a while now.
She’s got good jeans
It's pretty obvious there was no misstep here. Those who took offense are a very vocal minority to the point of being insufferable.

Pretty sure Sydney Sweeney helped
Because you all keep talking about that ad and giving free press to American Eagle — a brand that I’d never heard of before.
Also, I don’t think most people think the ad is that problematic. It’s not like she’s doing the nazi salute.
I mean, it’s just doing better than earlier this year… it’s not exactly thriving. Share prices tend to be reactionary. If the store traffic doesn’t match expectations, the stock price will come back down when actual YOY sales figures are released.
Pro
Ok so they are technically down since before hiring Sydney Sweeney. That makes more sense.
Investors 1. Care about the numbers. 2. Know that it’s a small percentage of lefties who were outraged. 3. Know that most publicity is good publicity.

I don't see why not. Trump did get elected president. People want what they want.
Because everyone just obeys ads. Can you even remember the last five you saw?
Seems like it wasn’t deaf to the tone of the country…
Lol @ anyone who would buy that stock, now or ever.

They’re laughing all the way to the bank.
Because they followed the Sydney campaign up with a small campaign moment featuring Travis Kelce, right in the midst of the engagement announcement!

Hey any publicity is good publicity and all that...
