By 5th year, I was 100% sure practicing wasn’t for me. At the time, I was working with two amazing partners. They made me wish I didn’t hate being a lawyer because I loved working with them so much. In some ways, that was a gift - I knew I hated the substance of the work I was doing, not the surrounding facts & circumstances.
What do you do as director of legal operations and what don’t you like about it? How did you transition to that job?
Pretty immediately. Bounced around a bit so as not to make any decisions prematurely.
Where’d you land?

Second year when I got essentially laid off. Worked at two other firms since and now in house for a bank. My well being, physical health, night times, weekends and sanity are more important than the money (though the money is good!).
It took me 4 years. I worked for as nice people as I could imagine, but didn’t love the work. And I looked ahead and saw the lifestyle of the partners and that wasn’t for me either. I considered in-house, but for me, I knew that was just a safe temporary solution and I’d eventually have to do the uncomfortable work of figuring out a bigger pivot. 13 years and multiple career shifts later - I have no regrets.
