Interesting. I have a hard science degree from a target (chemistry from an Ivy) and was told the 3.7 figure, corroborated by friends at MBB when I applied

Gpa is important for the first job. After that, experience is the only thing that matters. In fact, after 10+ years, the school nor degree isn’t even important anymore
How far out of school are you? Fresh out of undergrad, it'll most likely hurt your chances. After 2-3 years of work experience though they likely won't gaf. 4 YoE and managed to land an interview with McK a couple months ago despite a 2.8 GPA. Just did not mention it at any point.
With that said, it looked like GPA was a required field in the online Bain app so thinking ymmv depending on the firm.
Definitely. I'm not sure 3.5 would automatically be a deal breaker either tbh - definitely an uphill battle given the competition but would guess that if there is an auto/hard cutoff, 3.50 would probably be it (could definitely be wrong though.)

Just apply. If they say no you’re exactly in the same spot you are in now. You have everything to gain and only lose the time you take to apply.
I think you'll be in a good spot to get an interview given the information provided
I'd identify the diversity recruiting team and pipeline and make sure you access them. You can debate how much easier those pipelines are, but if nothing else they'll give you access to making a good first impression with a real person vs having to stand out in the larger general applicant pool (in which case the 3.5 becomes a bigger issue)

Regardless if right or wrong, I’d highlight the diversity thing to increase odds significantly
I got an interview with a 2.5. Called it out in ny cover letter and pivoted to my other experience and skills.
