You can get away with having near zero. But you can also be put on the fast track if you have great soft skills and average accounting skills
For real. If most accountants suck at soft skills and you’re at least half way decent compared to the general population.... you’ll separate yourself easily.
Very important I’d say. But most accountants’ social skills aren’t too good so if you’re bad amongst nonaccountants, you’re pretty much normal within accountants.
Mine have developed significantly. Mostly stuff like picking up on nonverbal cues.
Having good social skills and common sense are definitely career accelerators. You still need to have an acceptable level of technical skills to survive the first few years, but good social skills will accelerate your career within the firm. I believe partners will look for these traits at individuals who they believe they can groom them into the future of the firm.
It’s really amazing when I really look back at myself where I was few years ago and see how much my ability to interact with people has improved so far. (I’m also in Risk Advisory so my path could be a bit different than traditional Audit though)
Very important, it’s actually difficult to progress if you don’t have some social skills no matter how technical you are.
Definitely, I find it very easy to talk to clients, get interviewed for jobs, make small talk, where previously I found it took so much effort
I find social skills to be more important than technical skills. I’m not saying technical skills aren’t incredibly important, they are. However, if you don’t have the ability to communicate technical, then you aren’t providing value.
Depends on service line.
