not sure what your motivations are for moving, but consider that PwC has sped up the promotion timeline to senior from 3 years to 2 years, so if you’re up for promotion from a2 in july, it would likely be to s1. moves/starting over can be really challenging, so if you’re moving primarily to make senior sooner, keep in mind that you’ll probably make senior at PwC just as soon as you would at EY. if you think you’re not getting promoted to senior at PwC for something performance-related, as someone noted above, make sure you’re addressing those issues as they’re not just going to disappear in a new work environment!
Pro
Transferring departments shortly before this so they wouldn’t let me go to s1 early in a completely new role
I could be wrong, but I think pwc is the only big 4 that does 3 years as associate/staff. At EY it's 2 years and then promotion to senior. Nothing is guaranteed, but I think if you're hired as an a2 promotions to senior in October is likely.
Agile promotions are effective May and are evaluated a few months before. Regular annual promotions are evaluated over the summer and effective in October. Most people are promoted during the October time.
Making less money and not having certainty about being promoted don’t seem like good enough reasons to move. Once you’re there, there’s always a chance that you’ll get some story about why you can’t be promoted. If you’re not moving for more money and a promotion then I probably won’t do it.
At this stage they act like they’re doing you a huge favour. I would not bother. Why are you looking to move anyway?
I would never jump to another firm for a pay cut, especially in this market. An A2 can easily get a big bump to senior level pay even if you’re not getting promoted.
I would not bet on them promoting you, they could but nothing is promised unless it’s written on paper and signed. I jumped at 1.6 years to senior at another big 4, would recommend fighting for the title.
An earlier promotion is great in terms of the earlier pay raise but a year doesn’t set you back much in career progression and it’s still possible you could get earlier promotion to manager if they withheld the senior promotion a year. What made you apply for the new role in the first place? I’m really curious what pros you have for moving to a new firm. Is it the role you mentioned internally transferring to or something else?
Are you sure you won’t be promoted to senior at PwC in June? I thought all associates are now promoted to senior in 2 years? I wouldn’t recommend taking the risk unless this is a career change/new role or guaranteed opportunity to be on a certain project, especially for less money. If you’re not being promoted to senior at PwC with legitimate feedback on growth areas, I wouldn’t expect these points to magically be resolved at a new firm.
Nah just leave don’t do another busy season
EY promotes on May 1 for agile promotes and October 1 — not sure what the August date is
I would stay out for now and if not promoted then look for seniors jobs during summer or fall. That would give you surety that you getting senior title and more money, one bird in hand is better than two in bushes.
As someone mentioned above, never leave for same title, lower pay unless you are in a toxic environment and running away to save you health/life. Good luck
