How likely is it to get promoted in tech roles if you keep switching jobs every 2-3 years as most people suggest? I feel like there are better chances of getting promoted at a company you’re spent considerable time at rather than jumped ship just because of more salary.

That would be true if there was any loyalty left in the workplace. Now a company will replace you with a lower cost worker and think nothing of it. Now days, loyalty to a company gets you burned. Have you ever heard of Percy Mueller? He invented the microwave. Rayothon paid him two dollars for it. That is all. Nothing else. So the man that invented the device that is in almost every household in America got 2 dollars for his troubles and ideas. Never be blindly loyal to a company because they don't care about you.

Sadly, yes, this is very true in a lot of the industry. The only promotion path where I am would be to a position that's salaried exempt but supervising a 24/7/365 operation, which means not getting to sleep anymore.

It an either / or type situation. People typically move for better comp, which in effect is their raise, and those increases are usually more than what companies offer for raises. Unless your goal is leadership, moving jobs is generally the faster path to a growing comp package.

like

Depends on the company. Lot of places are like the post office. Flag needs to be at half staff for a promotion.

Being at a company for a long period of time can also pigeon whole you into the position you’re “really good at” and can also breed complacency.

Get into a position and work it from there. If there’s a path, work forwards it. If not - find a new path.

like

A few cycles of "we didn't have the budget to promote you", "you just aren't there yet, better luck next year" and you will realize why people move jobs. Promotions are hung out in front of you but you will infrequently be able to reach them. When you do get one you may see few tricks such as a bigger title for the same pay or only being able to jump one level every few years, even if you can jump more. Changing jobs can be a 10% raise while staying at a job can be a 1-4% raise.

I'm in finance/tech FPA, looking to go back to the defense industry for a 25% increase in TC. But wanted to see if I should leverage the new salary with current company to see if they'll match.

Background: got a promotion at current company that didn't come with sufficient increase . After stating my case I was told it would be evaluated next October, which is what prompted the initial job search.

Current TC 103K [88/15], offer 125k base [+discretionary bonus].

Hi Fishes! I have had the Director round for the Senior Associate role Pwc AC under Digital Learning and Upskilling. I have 15 months of experience in the consulting division. How much should the salary be for this role? And, do I stand a chance at the firm?

I’m going to do a small consulting project on the side for a small start up company. My current salary is $150k, so ~$83/hr. I think a $100/hr rate for this project is fair, but my spouse thinks it’s low. Also worth noting: it’s beyond my typical scope of knowledge since it’s a full marketing strategy vs just my current specialty. Thoughts?

Excited since this is a hop from a Product Analyst role and entails an offer of over $30,000 from what I'm getting now! This would be a permanent full-time compared to my current contractor role that ends in March.

Should I:
- Continue working with the recruiting company, hoping that they will find another position for me? (as they told me they will, and when they applied me I started working with my current company within 2 weeks)
- Work with the recruiter + apply for jobs on my own?
