I went through 6 technically with my current role. 1st with recruiter, 2nd office manager, 3rd admin supervisor, 4 and 5 with execs I'd be supporting and 6th was really just a vibe check with the rest of the admin team. Was it a lot? Absolutely. But this is the best and most supportive team I've ever worked with And I have no regrets. A lot of places I was interviewing with also had 4-5. Small companies were more like 2, maybe 3. One had 8 interviews and didn't even get an offer.
That is a lot, but sounds like it was well worth it!
I've heard crazy stories of people doing five or six interviews. I think it just means the hiring process is broken. Nobody wants to make a final decision, so the process gets kicked on to the next person. And on and on. Until someone finally has the authority and decides to make up their mind.
I think anything over four is, although I've been hearing a lot of 5+ interview stories as well. I have no interest in doing more than 4, but if I needed a job and they required more, I'd probably have to just suck it up and do it. It seems completely gratuitous, surely 4 is enough to know if someone is a good fit or not..
Once it gets past three interviews, I start to wonder if they’re serious about filling the role. A group interview on top of that? It might have to be my dream job for me to stick around past that point.
I had 3 and was asked to come back for a 4th but I declined due to the physical location of the job.
