When my previous employer (I was a home care nurse) started nitpicking taking PTO for a back injury, not only did I push back by bringing up all the “favors” I did that year (covering shifts, working late), I also applied for and received FMLA. He backed off pretty quickly. After that I kept records of what I was doing “above and beyond”.
Please hear me when I say this, STOP working the long nights! It will never show up in your reviews. They will never see it as going over and beyond. In order for you to avoid crashing out, there has to be a work life balance. It took me many years to realize this but now that my eyes are ope, I give my best from 7 to 3:30 pm and then I log off from work completely! My stress levels are down and I truly believe that once you take control and not allow employers to drain you mentally and emotionally, you’ll never waste countless hours again!
Way more than I should have to be honest with you. Work life balance is one of those things I am working on in the new year. At the end of the day, these companies don't care if we do or don't stay late, they just want the work done.
We don't even have reviews. I have to look at my pay stub to know about any bonuses/raises. The answer to your question is many nights and most Sundays. There's no point in me asking for acknowledgment or OT.
Lol, stop working late, completely not worth it if you are at a firm doesn’t value you as a person. I joined my firm (a top firm in this practice) 2 years ago. I got very small raise and bonus two years in a row. Last year, I basically billed 12+ hours EVERY SINGLE DAY and some time even 16, 17 hours. Most of my coworkers didn‘t show up till 11 AM and logoff after 3 PM but they are the one getting big raise big bonus and they have high base salary. Management told me it’s because they have worked here over 20, 30 years so it‘s a reward for their “loyalty”. Partners and associates keep saying “you are the best” “you are the best” but just don’t want to pay me. I finally decided to leave this firm after New Year. F this SxxT!
I can happily say that I have not worked late night in five years. When I did, I was always rewarded. The last attorney I did a late night for gave me a free day off and when he found out that late night was my mother's birthday, he gave me an Amazon gift card to get her a gift.
