Play the long game, doesn't hurt to keep the connection but definitely don't treat it as if it's your only option you go for. (Don't put all your eggs in one basket scenario.) Continue on your job hunt regardless of what happens with this opportunity.
Is this for a job interview? Seems they are in no rush to hire, which means possibly they need someone but don’t have the budget. A friend was recently hired and then within three months let go for budgetary reasons. Seems they jumped the gun there but this company as annoying as your experience has been, is possibly waiting for better financial stability. In short, try to get a reason for the postponements and then evaluate if it’s a valid reason.
It's been something different each time. To their benefit one was literally a natural disaster.
Depends on the context. Is this in relation to a job opportunity? Sometimes legitimate conflicts come up; if it’s worth it, play the long game - the company and team may appreciate your patience.
On the flip side, it also speaks to their culture. How do they act with the reschedules? Are they apologetic? What does your gut say - do you feel like these are excuses, or are they legitimate issues resulting in a shifting timeline? If the former, maybe worth exploring something else. If the latter, decide if you want to opt in for the long game.
Is this related to getting together with a professional contact? We’re in a pandemic, so there are a lot of things out of our control - mental health, covid and other illnesses, fear of losing jobs with current expectations of many companies that we are all 100% available for anything these days, etc. But again... you might thank them for letting you know they couldn’t make the last one, then put the ball squarely in their court for rescheduling again in the future if that’s something they’d like to do. And perhaps start looking for another contact or mentor moving forward if they do not.
I went back and forth with a prospect for about 4 months before the role, which I was really excited about, came to fruition. I honestly couldn’t be happier. I know my case was one of the positive ones, but if there is legitimate rationale, then might be worth continuing to explore to see where it leads.
