How much does industry background matter for in-house roles?I’ve noticed that many in-house postings strongly prefer candidates with prior experience in the same industry (tech, fintech, retail, healthcare, etc.), even when the legal work itself seems transferable. how critical is industry match really? And for folks here, have you successfully crossed industries, or does it usually hold people back?

When all other metrics between candidates are somewhat equal, most companies will prefer the candidate with relevant industry experience. It’s just one less thing the new lawyer has to get up to speed on.

It can count for a lot. You're right that the legal work, or at least much of it, might be transferable. There's still a lot of knowledge gained by working within an industry and that can't be discounted. On the simplest level, someone within an industry will likely be favored just because it would be considered a "safe hire."

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?
