How much monetary value would you place on a fully remote role (with no chance of a bait and switch to hybrid/full RTO)? I understand that the answer is different for everybody, so I’m just trying to see how others think through the tradeoffs. The remote roles I’m seeing offer around 10-20% lower base salary than similarly situated roles

depends if ur a junior and whether you have kids. being remote will kill opportunities if you are a junior

likefunny

theres alot of office social dynamics that the remote crowd will lose out on, esp the chronically online gen z

funny

Tbh I think it depends on where you live. If low cost of living take the remote role. If you are in a high cost of living area just pick a hybrid with a few days in office that pays significantly more

I consider how much money I’d need to spend to be in (gas, parking, lunch if you stay long enough) and multiply it by the number of days I have to go in a year. For me (3x a week (coffee badge), no kids, about an hour commute round trip), I’d take 15k less for remote.

Amount would be higher if I had kids or if I had to stay whole day.

like

10 to 20 percent of what?

TC for junior roles. Hybrid roles are offering $200k - $300k. Remote, 10-20% less than that

I am being forced into the office after being remote and mostly remote and I would
gladly take a pay cut to wfh more so much more flexibility

Outside counsel has been prepping company witnesses for a trial in August. It is my subject area so I am supervising outside counsel. I did not, however, choose the counsel. He is doing a really awful job. Co counsel is better, but not great either. Higher ups love the firm… I do not want to micromanage, but I have genuine concerns about outside counsel’s ability to try this case. Trials are rare, and I just don’t think these guys have actually tried many cases. Cont. below…

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”

When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?
