Do you mean you work there already and you’re doing the work but there is a position open so you’re interviewing for your job (or a portion of it)?
I've had this work out for me in the past a couple times in the past 10 years. Moved from a specialist to training support to acting team lead to team lead, and then did the same thing again in another role. Just need to make sure you communicate with your management and let them know that's what you want and make sure you're doing what you can to show you're capable of the work.
If they see you fit and if they can't find someone else better fitting than you, then may be you can get the role any time soon. Just show them that you deserve the position. Give it your best performance.
In my experience, your odds are pretty good, since you have the unique opportunity to prove your worth in the specific role you are going for.
I have never tried this but I like the idea. I would be curious to see if this actually works.
Hmm. Honestly, you might have a chance. I suggest you still give your best while you are in that position and learn everything that you can.
