I’m still recovering from a bad month last month. I think it only becomes sustainable if we learn how to balance our schedules... which is not easy for people like us who are constantly late and scrambling to keep up.
My personal goal over the next couple weeks is to establish some kind of routine, so that there’s more controlling my schedule than “work” and “not work.” Might help build a more sustainable work pattern.
“Establish some kind of routine, so that there’s more controlling my schedule than “work” and “not work”.”
This is my biggest challenge but has also been my biggest success when I’ve been able to do it. I figured it out towards the end of law school and at one point at my last firm, but for the most part it’s still a challenge.
For example- last weekend, I had a draft that the partner originally wanted on Friday, but for scheduling reasons on his end and mine, he ended up telling me to take a little more time with it and get him a good draft my Sunday afternoon. As soon as he said that, my whole weekend became “work” and the work expanded to fill all of Saturday and Sunday. Would have been nice to just take the few more hours I needed on Saturday afternoon and then be done and enjoy my weekend.

Thank you all for the support and advice! Feeling like shit after a week of sprinting indeed reminds me of the negative side of procrastination, I’ll try to remember next time I slack off, and work on a better routine.
-Wake up at 8, start working at 9
-Work 25min take 5min break, x 4 then 30min break
-Repeat then 1h lunch break instead of 30min break
-Repeat [(25+5) * 4 +30min break] *2 or 3
-Work out, go for a walk, make dinner, and if the above is respected and I hit my billables or don’t have a deadline, rest for the evening which will be a reward and will motivate me to stick to the schedule during the day. If not, repeat after 1h dinner break until 11pm max.
Way to grind last week, but totally with you on the fatigue and struggle with endurance.
It’s small, but I’ve made a concerted effort to take a 30 min lunch and dinner break every day where I step away from the computer, and I don’t reply to emails during that time unless it’s truly needed. I remind myself that I’d be taking those breaks in “normal” times walking down to the cafeteria or going to grab a cup of coffee. WFH shouldn’t equal an expectation for immediate responsiveness all of the time, imho!
If you normally struggle, you may have hustled too hard last week. Try building up to that. Shoot for just 40-45 hours and quality work and then build up to more.
