If you live in a city where an Account Exec salary can afford to buy a home, you will not want to relocate to SF. You’re in for a huge sticker shock and disappointment. Stay where you are and enjoy settling into the new home. Btw I’ve heard BBDO SF is also terrible.
I worked there and I can confirm that they do not pay with the SF cost of living in mind. Also, if you are going to work on Wells Fargo, id run the other way. They are awful clients and the account lead won’t care at all about your work life balance.
Hey @OP, did you end up taking the job? If so, what are your thoughts so far? I’m considering a move to BBDO SF as an AS and am interested to find out more about the culture, growth opportunities, etc. I’m also relocating from a smaller market, so would take a hit to my quality of life, but the trade offs would be better growth opportunities and earning potential down the line. The salary they’ve offered seems low for SF cost of living, and I’m a little worried about culture of the client (WF). Any thoughts would be helpful!
But really, despite the fact I’m in a unique situation, super interested to hear thoughts on the culture and growth opps at BBDO SF.
For reasons you just stated in the above, I would not do it.
You can always go back when you’ve got more years under your belt and have opportunities to do real work bc it seems that you have a good thing going.
Depends on how much you want to get a new (known) agency on ur resume. I know people there and they are good. Not the best, but really good. If ur in a secondary market, you may not be at that level. What do you want? A house? (Totally understandable if u want a house and a life) or to move ur career ahead?
Dude no. SF is very expensive (worse than NYC) and not exactly a prime advertising market. Some will disagree, but unless you are getting a huge salary and title bump I would not consider it.
That said, if you can rent out your house it might not be so bad. But it will still be a downgrade in terms of lifestyle.
When I lived in LA I had a similar opportunity in SF and ultimately turned it down because I owned a house and didn’t want to give it up. When the right job in NYC came along a few years later I knew it was right based on the SF experience. I also had more experience and could get enough additional money to make NYC bearable.
While the cost of living in SF is super expensive, you can definitely get a huge salary bump by moving here. If you move, they will negotiate so do your research and push for more money. Also, now that you have a house under your belt- you could potentially pay a mortgage in the east bay for same amount as SF rent. Also, SF ad market may seem small, but there are some great shops and accounts out here.
But, it’s bigger than my current shop. I’d work in a bigger brand, too.
Resume builder could be a good career move for a single person, despite the financial loss.
Open to thoughts and advice. Thanks Fishbowl.
@AE1 - that’s kind of the point I guess. I’m in a market where I’m in a significant financial advantage to my peers. But the agency I work at is pretty isolated so, unlike NY/CHI/LA/Etc, I don’t have competitive opps within the market to grow my career or seek out if layoffs are abound.
I’m extremely fortunate now, but maybe a move to a bigger market would be a boon to my career in the long term
Which account? There are good people there, and if you’re not in the network right now, it would open up the value of additional opportunities.
