I lived in both and love both. Since you have kids, I would say Chicago. Think it would just be easier to raise kids there- you get much more space, might be able to get a town house with a yard!
Pro
You’re right about the space.
Would I rather live in a worse city for less money..?
Pro
Found the New Yorker!!!
Lived in Chicago and NY. Chicago seems like the better bet for you (agree with the space and family) but a ~100K salary difference is sizeable and I’m not entirely convinced Chicago would be that less expensive. But the Midwest is definitely more family friendly but less career opportunities.
Pro
$100k is huge. $100k more in NY money doesn’t feel like much. It can make you NY comfortable, though.
Neither.
Pro
Good insight. Thanks!!

I’d choose Chicago with kids, but I haven’t lived in either and don’t have kids so take this with a grain of salt.
Pro
Well taken.
NYC is a young person's game. Gimme Chicago any day.
Pro
It truly is!!

Chicago tavern style pizza is better than anything in NYC

I dream about Vito and Nicks weekly
I’d choose NY and live in NJ. Of course, I am a Native New Yorker with family in Jersey.
I also agree with the “neither” as someone moving to a MCOL area.
Lol!

Illinois is a failing state - look at their property tax death spiral. They are even starting to charge homeowners leaving the state property exit taxes a la the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany bc too many taxpayers are fleeing. The state constitution forbids Illinois from reducing state pensions so expect to get gouged on perpetually increasing property and income taxes to make up for the pension shortfall.

Yeah it’s the best thing going if you can get into the trough
How often would you need to commute? If flexible (2-3 days in office), I'd do NY and live in CT. 1-1.5hr commute (one-way), great schools, more bang for your buck than NYC housing.
Pro
NYC- Not more than 2 days
