I mean there are options now. You have magnet schools that are ran by the district and state & federally funded.
You also have charter schools (get different people feel different ways about them and there can be a huge range in quality), but those schools are public schools and are state and federally funded ( usually with less money than district schools)
Not sure about NYC, but a lot of private schools across the country are also becoming increasingly diverse as we shell out the cash for them.
Parental involvement is key at any type of institution-public/ private; urban/suburban/rural-especially for black and brown kids.
So I encourage you to tour any school before enrolling to assess initial fit for your child and to be a constant presence once they enroll.
I also encourage you to know the academic standards for each grade level for your state. Today’s kids are expected to move faster than we did.
So know the standard and start working with your kid at ages 2,3,and 4 to start developing the skills needed to meet Kindergarten standard. If your kids are older than that, be sure to include at least one summer activity that is academic enrichment for the next grade.
Knowing the standard is also key to assessing if the school is working for you. Lots of parents say “My child is going to a C rated school and they are doing great. So school ratings must not matter”, but great to you no matter how degreed or educated you are still may not be meeting grade level standards. Conversely people assume just bc their child is in a A-rated school, they must be at grade level. This is also not always the case-especially for black & brown kids in predominantly white schools. So know the standards!
Rant done-I worked in K-12 education back in the day. So this is a topic of passion and professional expertise for me
Any school district can be a good one for your kids with your advocacy. My kids go to a “C+” ranked school district and have thrived due to us being engaged and working through issues together. Going to a private school doesn’t negate issues - it just creates different ones to solve.
I feel like unless you are sending your kids to one of those 50k a year private schools it’s a waste. I went to college with some people that went to Catholic school and some that went to boarding school and it seems like we are in the same place in life. For some of these people I can say I am doing better and I went to a decent high school in East Harlem. Societally, I feel like it kind of contributes to brain drain. I am conflicted because we all want what is best for our kids and that means putting them in the best schools but that comes at the expense of brain drain and exposing other kids to kids from stable homes and parents that went to good colleges. Also idk if imma spend 50k a year I rather do it for college than k-12. Them elitist private schools also doesn’t really expose kids to reality and it seems like they are in a bubble. Also historically private schools were used as a tool to keep schools segregated so for me there are lots of reasons. I’m not gonna have my kid in some school where she is qualified and other students think she only got in because she is black. With all the backlash about CRT ( I don’t know why people have a problem with it) I see it only getting worse for students of color
My kids will also go to the local public school in Los Angeles. I think active, involved parents make all the difference.
Why are you against private schools?
