Are you looking on Indeed? I’ve seen a number of DC bar required job postings. Also, don’t be afraid to apply for a job even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements. If you meet around half, apply. Consider contract attorney roles to get some experience while you continue your search.

It’s probably a little of both. The pendulum has swung wildly in favor of firms in 2025 such that we can be extremely picky in who we hire. Compare this to 2021 when even mediocre lawyers had multiple offers from firms.

Join the bar association for the CLE and networking opportunities (often the student/first year rate is incredibly cheap or free). Also nurture the relationships with your school’s career services office - I’ve hired associates through both avenues lately.
Consider in-house position, non-profits and government jobs. It can take time to find a job in a down economy! Also, you can always “hang your shingle” and start your own firm. Join every bar association. Attend every event. Network, network, network.
I have been thinking about starting my own firm, but it seems like a big dream. I don't know if that makes sense, but going to law school already felt like I was shooting for stars I may never reach, and starting a law firm feels just like that for me. As much as I would love to do it, I am beyond scared.
