I am a paralegal in Santa Barbara, have been a paralegal for almost 5 years, and have my certification from UCSB as well as a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. I am in my final year of law school and a certified law student. I made $62,000 salary and I get a $400/month contribution for health insurance. I am the sole paralegal at the firm. I am asking for a salary adjustment, any advice? It seems like I am being paid drastically below the median salary of a paralegal with my skillset.

The problem is your working at a smaller firm. I am assuming you are both working and in law school and so maybe that informed your decision to work there but if you want any meaningful increase in salary, you need to change employers. There are secretary that makes 62,000 at most firms. I I suggest interviewing aggressively getting a job offer and then coming back to you your solo practice with the offer in hand to show Market.

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

For those of you who made the switch to in house/corporate law, what was your experience like? Did you have to take a lower position to gain the experience or were you able to argue that your soft skills were transferable to in house? I’ve been in litigation for 15 years and I’m looking to make the switch. Ultimately, I’d like to get into Legal Ops, but feel getting some in house experience first would be beneficial.

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? I’m not the decision maker, but it’s been a few weeks with very few applicants. I’m curious if there’s something hurting the firm in its search.
