Short answer: drink water, go to bed an hour early, and take 2 multivitamins daily. Long answer: you are doing, caring too much and you need to pull back. Practice extreme self care. Get some exercise, eat quality food. Go to a park or a beach- somewhere outside in nature. Watch funny movies or comedy specials; laugh. Set your classroom up so that a lot of the stuff that is so time consuming becomes automatic. Make some of the stuff pass/fail. You have health insurance- use it. You may have a medical condition like anemia or low thyroid in which case you may need meds. If you have no outlet for relaxation that is part of the problem. Take up a hobby, take some mental health days off. It sounds like you need one. Pick a Friday or a Monday. Assign a video and have the kids write 10-20 facts about the video. If you are single, start dating. If you have a partner, tell them how you feel and ask for help. Hope this helps. Most of us are really with you in this struggle.
Often after school I will meet with my friends Jim, Johnny, or Jose to rehash the day. Sometime Jose brings his sister Margarita, otherwise we meet 1:1 because bad things happen when this crew mixes. I’ve noticed when things are bad, our meetings last about a fifth longer than when things are good. I’d love to meet them for lunch as I am confident doing so would lead to a more enjoyable afternoon. But I am also sure admin would either frown on that or, more likely, horn in and take up their support as well.
Fricking hilarious! LMAO!🤪😂🤣
I take a b vitamin complex and my thyroid meds. Maybe get your thyroid thoroughly checked?
I take a variety of supplements including liquid B12 and B complex and melatonin at night to sleep better.
Do you take magnesium glycinate?
Just remember the HUGE difference you are making in your students' young lives. I still remember fondly my Kansas teachers from elementary school. Other than being a doctor or scientist, I can think of no better way of making a difference in the world. You are doing such important work.
I work at a small alternative high school in Washington State. All the teachers love their jobs and some have been teaching there 20+ years. Maybe a smaller school?
Without us teachers, there would be no doctors, scientists or other professionals trying to make life better for everyone.

Vitamin D 2000, Magnesium, B12. I too have thyroid issues, and agree that it’s good to get that checked. Seems like so many ppl deal w thyroid issues.
Starting my 22nd year, I ask myself daily what have I done with my life?
I ask myself that question as well. I majored in Social Sciences with an emphasis in Social Work. I've never been gainfully employed with well paying jobs. I'm sure you're given all your students a great foundation for their middle school journey.
I am networking my butt off to out of mine. The kids do and now like they have no soul: no punishment discipline or incentive works. I teach in a small rural town. My classes only function if I operate them as a juvenile detention. That is emotionally draining. I am a teacher, not a parole officer. I am a teacher. Not a behaviorist.
I am a behaviorist. Offer incentives. Group the kids at tables, or even do boys against girls. Start with an immediate reward to the group(s) that is the most attentive, polite, on-task. Immediate, like at the end of that period. Jolly ranchers. Something very tangible.
Then gradually start to extend the period of time that a group gets in order to earn good-behavior points. For example, after a week or so of doing daily rewards, do a week-long competition. Review your expectations with the kids at the beginning of the week, then let the groups earn points for meeting those expectations (or NOT earn points for NOT meeting them).
It’s important to praise the GOOD behavior (verbally, with a smile, then let them see you give that group a point), and IGNORE (as much as possible) the negative behavior. Example: If one group is talking over you, or otherwise misbehaving, notice a group that is on-task, comment (loudly enough to be heard) how GREAT that group is doing, then give the group a point, while giving no attention to the misbehaving group. Once the misbehaving group quiets down (which often happens after another group is acknowledged for good behavior), be sure to NOTICE, comment on their good behavior, and give a point.
The longer the groups compete for a reward (a week, rather than a day), the better the reward should be (first a jolly rancher for a successful day; then a homework pass for the kids in a week long competition, etc).
Then, after 2-3 weeks of week-longs, try moving it to a whole month, with a reward like a pizza party of movie day. It’s a long process, but just by noticing and commenting on the GOOD you see, you’ll begin to feel better about your kids too. The more the kids see that you expect and appreciate the good stuff they do, the more rapport-building takes place.
Eventually you may want to rearrange the groups, or even (down the line) illiminate them. Go slow, make it fun, laugh a lot. Eventually this type of positive reinforcement for good behavior will become automatic for you. It’s worth it. Go get ‘em!!
