I am in a specialist group housed within my firm’s litigation department. I recently had a very large case wrap up, and since then, work has slowed down. This appears to be a trend across all the associates in my group. I reached out to the head of litigation for work, and the head of my group immediately intervened saying that I can’t do work outside my specific group. Makes sense if our group is swamped, but it’s been two weeks, and I am averaging 20 billable hours a week. What should I do?

Two weeks of 20 billables after a big case seems totally reasonable. It’s not clear to me what year your are but it’s pretty normal in our general lit group to coast for a bit after a big trial, hearing, or other push.

I’m a seventh year. I am probably jumping the gun too soon but also have a very high hours requirement that i want to get ahead of, particularly because i have a vacation planned for the end of the year. Oh the joys of private practice 🙃

Curious what other junior associates at PR agencies are making off the bat? I earned my master’s degree last year and accepted a JA role for $36K. Recently, my salary was adjusted to $40K due to having been on the lower end of the pay spectrum for my role. Wondering if my new salary is more aligned with others at my level.

I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).
