I am in late-stage interviews for an in-house role, but it would be 5 days a week in office, non-negotiable. This job is everything I could want, but my commute is over an hour each way. If I get it, should I take it with the intention of leaving in a year or 2, just to get my foot in the door in-house?

It’s a bad in-house market right now, so congrats on getting an offer.

You certainly can plan to jump in a year or two, but that commute is brutal…

Keep in mind it may take a while to get that second in-house job. Just being in-house doesn’t automatically mean you’ll find a second in-house job quickly.

As someone who has been searching for 2yrs, I can attest to this. Feels like it was easier getting the first.

Commute would sap the very essence out of me. I go in once every other week and 20 min each way.

Is it really five days per week? My current role was advertised as five days on-site per week. The company culture is five days on-site per week. My offer letter says five days on-site per week.

I’ve worked from home at least one day a week for the last few months and almost two full weeks this month because things come up and its hard to put the “ability to do the job from anywhere” genie back in the bottle. If you report to the GC, find out her view and see if she’s flexible about it.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?
