Seniority rules in a lot of those positions. If it wasn’t already discussed, you are usually at the mercy of whatever they want to assign you to.
From my experience in sales, sales territories can look arbitrary geographically. But they make sense on paper to someone else higher up.
I once worked with a rep that covered customers in every Gulf state outside of TX and she killed her quota every time. Now she is a big dog in our company, making product choices from home and representing the company at alot of major conferences across the US.
My advice:
Look at the situation as a reason to show them who you are and beat the team’s sales #s with the “new” territory. Then you can pick wherever you want to go.
But if not, then you likely will not last in sales at that company.
