I am pretty sure I was added onto a recent patent trial solely because I’m black and have a relationship the judge (also black). In hindsight this makes sense. I’m not a patent litigator and despite being a fifth year at the time, the lead partner did not have me doing anything meaningful. I was making copies and getting him coffee most of the time and was not involved in trial strategy meetings. Partner went out of his way to tell me he didn’t care about my race when he staffed me on the case..

I'm a younger plaintiff's side attorney (31). Does anyone else feel like white attorneys give you a particularly harder time? Like unreasonably denying clear facts, or trying to fish for a way to sanction you? My work quality is slipping due to brain fog and mental health issues and I don’t know how to address it with my firm or who to go to. Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.
