I can’t tell if it’s perception or reality, but it seems like regional firms / local counsel always have increased competency among litigation paralegals, and just more of them, than biglaw does. Not taking away from any biglaw paralegals, I have worked with several stars, but they seem to be fewer in biglaw while our local counsel will have multiple reliable paralegals staffed on the case team.

What gives? Is there a pay difference? Is biglaw more stressful? Is my perception not reality?

Big law is more stressful and mid firms are more willing to pay for paralegals vs using JR associates

like

Big law uses junior associates to do a lot of the paralegal-level work. In smaller firms you will find partner-paralegal pairs that have worked together for years. Great for the partners who have a trusted helper who will always remain in the helper role; can be ok or not so great for associates.

like

Midsize firms pay a lot better because they have more career paralegals.

Has anyone else in their job search noticed how the fully remote positions have hundreds (if not over 1000) applicants while the on-site or hybrid positions have very little? Are we all now competing for these remote jobs?? 😩

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).
