I am at 80% schedule with 3 kids, my husband is now working on a special project that will not pay off until finished, my current paycheck doesn’t cover the bills, but I am not going back to full time now, mostly because full time doesn’t mean 40 hours it could be 50-80 hours, right now I say I am on flex and can say no to new engagements but if I go full time, I will loose this excuse. Kids grow quickly, there is plenty of time to build career and make money.
i feel great having my limitation as well. people know this and have been great working with it so far. my commitment is with my family now and I get to still have a great, but somewhat limited career.
...if I stay at 75%, we'd be living off savings and loan money, which goes against every fiber of my CPA being. so it comes down to choosing time with my baby vs being able to support my family. I'm curious what other parents would choose.
If someone made me choose I’d give up my career for my kids in a minute. They are awesome. Fortunate that my group and team respect my time with them
can you work the other 25% in a flexible manner by telecommuting evening/weekends when you have time?
For me it was an all or nothing thing. It’s so hard to stick to any percent of a schedule with the expectations and workload (even on here a few days ago someone was complaining about picking up slack for parents not pulling their weight 🙄). If I was going to work I was doing it 100% or I was staying home full time. For me at least it felt like I was under a microscope and an inconvenience doing less than 100% so I left to stay home full time but we are able to make it work with other income
I agree. my partner in charge decided to lay out my hours in a contract. so my pay is 75%, but the hours for certain months are stated. I feel better about having these limitations. no blurry lines. I'd love to stay home, but that won't work for my family right now. maybe with #2, we'll be closer to my husband getting a paycheck again 😊
If you are able to, why don’t you ask around and see if any moms in your neighborhood want to drop off their baby with you for 2-3hrs while you are home (in your non-working time) so that they can go to dr appts, get some personal things done, etc and you can get some extra $$ that way. Won’t equate 25% of the paycheck that you are missing, but still something - you will still be at home with your little one, plus another baby, and get a little extra cash.
I had the same issue. Try working remotely more. I work from home Mondays and Fridays now so I'm able to make up my hours, since I don't have to spend time getting ready and commuting 2 days a week.
