Honestly this might be a “no ethical consumption in capitalism” situation.
You can probably avoid places like Consulting that will be heavily pushing AI, but the reality is that every industry will leverage AI to some degree.
I understand where you are coming from. Don't give up on finding that pathway. Many of these responses stating "no ethical consumption under capitalism" don't understand the concept of harm reduction. Or perhaps they do, and use that statement as an excuse to not give up anything that costs comfort. Wishing you the best in this journey!
I didn't feel like scrolling back up to find the comment but you're here now. And many others shared a similar sentiment of how being unethical is unavoidable, you just used the general phrase that's been floating the internet.
I'm unsure we read the same original post. I didn't see OP "indicate that it's easily avoidable". They asked about AI specifically (not all consumption), and how they can go about avoiding it, even though it probably means a huge career change. They also specified they will probably leave corporate America. It's like your response is to something else.
I just want to encourage OP to think outside the box. I left consulting and although my job isn't fully ethical (it is in America), and I took a small pay-cut, it is far more ethical than my last one and I can sleep better for it. Giving up some comforts has been beyond worth it. It was scary as hell leaving consulting and I can't count how many folks told me "everything is unethical anyway!" Yes, but I am currently trying to avoid this specific unethical thing. Still wishing OP luck on the journey! I'm on the same path too and it's been immensely rewarding
1. Farming
2. Plumber
...
You get the idea
Neither of those are immune from AI - Ai is already making its way into large agra. And it's only a matter of time before the trades adopt Ai for diagnosis (if they haven't already). The only way to insulate yourself is to be financially self sufficient and go buy some land somewhere rurally and live off grid.
I was in consulting for years and I found many things totally unethical before AI, and I understand your hesitation about AI. I have a few sincere ideas for you, so hang on. Just FYI - I made things harder for myself by speaking up, and I'd do it again. The reality is: consulting is exhausting.
I went into business for myself as a consultant, and recently started a company called humanU+AI because I believe that AI, used correctly, can make work and lives better. That much power should not be in the hands of the oligarchs - we are widening the digital divide. In addition, we need legislation in this country to ensure that AI is used ethically. I'm a fan of Anthropic because they seem to have a strong sense of what the industry should be. There are organizations and people who just specialize in AI ethics, so you might find that interesting.
I enjoy projects for not-for-profits, and I do think there are opportunities there, although some of these understaffed organizations want to use AI as a force multiplier.
The truth is AI can help augment human efforts, however, it cannot be trusted with the keys to the kingdom. At this stage, AI can do fantastic things but can't tell when it garbles text in a graphic, is inconsistent, and requires human reality checks in the flow of work.
What you do next really depends on where your interests and skills intersect in a marketable way. I'm working on a program for people in career transitions, so I have been thinking about what is next for many of us. Take your power back. Never say die! Have a good weekend and stay away from the computer - S.
Exit to… what? If no job is ethical I guess you literally have to subsistence farm and hope the industries around you happen to be clean
Nursing?
stop doing drugs please
@OP I have been thinking the same. I am considering starting a farming co-op based on similar model to what they do in Italy. Basically smallish farms band together to own the production and sale of their product think high end cheese or meat. if interested let me know
What exactly do you find unethical about it? And how do you define ethics?
Maybe therapy instead of making a weird rash choice about your life
Is this for real? It is like saying that using a calculator after pen and paper was unethical. AI is just a tool, and alongside consulting experience and frameworks can be used very effectively and at great value to clients.
Does a calculator train itself on the hard work of other people and then reproduce it, claiming it as its own, new, "generated" product?
Do you consider the Internet to be unethical?
Yea but AI is speed running our doom in comparison
I think the Amish thought the same about electricity. good luck haha
Look for jobs that don't involve electricity and you have a small chance of finding employment safe from AI.
I consider the steam engine to have been unethical, but here we are.
Construction Project Manager 🤑
In what sense? You still need a human to manage and coordinate with subcontractors throughout the course of construction. Sure, you can automate a lot of the general processes such as billing/invoicing and other administrative tasks, but running jobs is a human occupation that AI won’t replace for many years to come. Maybe one day.
Nursing
and you think being a consultant is the pinnacle of ethics and ethical business? really?
Perhaps you can get a job at Walmart. Or perhaps as a barista at Starbucks if you don't find Starbucks to be a corporate megolith using employees as hourly paid human chattel.
I don't see AI as fundamentally unethical if you choose to use it ethically.
Yes, AI has taken a serious bite out of some people’s consulting business. Specifically, it impacted consultants who focused on telling clients what to do and how to do It. AI can do that for free, and probably get it about 80% correct. What AI can’t well do is explain “why”, provide context, read the politics, help the client exercise discernment, and create a bespoke solution for clients rather than provide the “best practice“ answers and erode a client’s ability to differentiate themselves. If your consulting practice is about fitting clients into your offerings rather than collaborating with clients to find a solution that is unique to them, then yes, it’s probably time to exit consulting.
Life is not black-and-white no matter how much of it we spend in the muted hues of emails and texts.
Capitalism and AI also are not fundamentally good or evil. Artificial intelligence will never be equivalent to actual intelligence however, that is the direction in which the world is moving.
In my middleaged attempt to avoid being left behind, I myself have made the pivot to embrace the new technology.
