I did 8 years in the Reserve as an officer, including a year deployment, and just transferred into the IRR. I had an 8 year ROTC obligation which is now complete. I received a letter from USARC giving me the option to get out completely instead of just the IRR.

Is there any reason to stay in the IRR if I’m 99.9% certain I am done with the Army? I have good health insurance through my civilian job and I don’t think I qualify for anything above a minuscule pension.

I probably would’ve resigned my commission to begin with but it was a lot easier process to just ask to transfer to the IRR

like

Just get out. There's nothing to the IRR.

I’d recommend staying for at least two years, that .1% of going back increases after you haven’t been doing it for a while you start to miss it. It’s after two years you still have no desire to go back resigning commission.

100% just get out.

To all the post-9/11 veterans, it’s a somber day that unites us all in the reason we fought. It’s easy to forget - especially with the younger generation having 9/11 be a history lesson rather than something they lived through. The waters became muddy with two wars and politicians, but you all stepped up and did your duty. Thank you all for your service, it’s an honor whether we crossed paths or not.
