I don’t understand which is more important (that may be the wrong way to phrase this) but work or the CPA exam. Because the firms place such a heavy emphasis on passing the CPA, yet, I have not had time to study or anything in the past few weeks (I know it’s busy season) to get me closer to passing the exam. I understand you have to work and they pay you to work and most pay for your study materials. But also I feel like I can’t focus on work knowing I have to pass & study for the exam…

The way I think of it is don't go above and beyond for your job while you're studying. Don't try to stand out. Don't go out of your way to help people. You need to be selfish while you study

like

Very very true, very few of us are giving our 100% anyway and it's about being strategic on when to do that and when not to. Sometimes blending in is ok!

Give priority to the exam. If you don't pass it you won't be eligible for mgr. If you don't get your CPA you have closed a lot of opportunities.

I agree with this. Really solid advice.

I worked 2 jobs and studied for the CPA exam. I put more effort in studying than my work. But studying came first.

I’m not naive or fresh out of law school, but I’m at a point where I’m saying to myself “Why can’t I have it all?” I’ve been offered a job for more pay and less hours and I keep thinking to myself, what’s the catch? I know people will say no promotion potential or that’s not how it works…but what if it could? What if you make yourself valuable by still setting your boundaries? Why would we resent someone who has that opportunity?

Recently accepted a temp role as an HR admin for a former employer. Previously interned there & left because my supervisor did not have any growth opportunities planned out for me; this was in spite of my stellar performance, as reflected in my 90 day review. She has since left the company, but there’s crazy turnover in the company & in the HR department in particular. Just that an HR coordinator resigned. Is it worth going back into a dumpster fire w/ no leadership to gain experience?
