I follow this person on LinkedIn who makes up 'What if' scenarios for brands, and this week it was 'what McDonald's served high tea?'. His caption then explained that consistency is great until it becomes boring, so brands need to know how to switch it up. Is it just me, or is it absolutely weird to see McDonald's being served this way? It's so off-brand that I didn't think this change would float well as an 'unpredictable surprise' but would make me, as a consumer, feel like McD has lost the plot. Thoughts?

It's incredibly weird, which is probably why they selected it as an option. I'm sure it's driving tons of engagement. If this was at all serious, it'd obviously be insane. It kind of reminds me of IHOP's "International House of Burgers" stunt from a few years ago.

funny

I would like this idea better if it weren't so obviously AI-generated. I love the concept and I think challenging our preconceptions about branding is a great idea, but I just wish it didn't require such obvious artificial intelligence.

I think any pivot still needs to feel authentic and rooted in the brand’s core identity. If a move feels too disconnected from what consumers love and expect, it risks alienating loyal customers rather than delighting them with surprise. Consistency builds trust, and the best brand innovations are those that add a twist without losing that familiar essence.

HAHHA I don't know why but this made me laugh so hard. Just the though of this scenario makes me giggle because this just doesn't seem like a thing McDonald's would ever do. But that is because of what we already know, if they only ever served high tea then we might not think it was too weird.
