I got a verbal offer from a WPP agency today. The role's budgeted salary is 5k less than my desired salary.
The recruiter can get me closer but still not at my desired salary. Otherwise - it would have to go through a long approval process with no guarantee that the salary would even be OK'd.
I'm coming from a small agency, so I could be wrong - but I don't want to sell myself short by accepting the first salary they offer. Do I have any room to negotiate? Or is that risky?

The only thing to add is WPP is notorious for infrequent raises so whatever salary you start at, be prepared to have it for a while…

like

Yeah VP1 I was going to say I’d be less worried about the $5k now, and more about how difficult it’s going to be to get a raise there later.

like

You’re not gonna notice $5k vs $2-3k what the recruiter can get you. Don’t split hairs over pennies and only focus on the larger number. Is it more than you’re making now? Is it a better opportunity/room for growth/more exposure? What’s the raise schedule like? Bigger picture.

like

I agree with the above. Although, I do have to say if they knew what your desired salary was you should ask if they can get closer to what you originally asked for. If it’s a no, at least you asked. If it’s a yes, cool more money. I do know that they have a salary cap they have to work within but may have a little wiggle room to go over. Doesn’t hurt to ask.

So at the end of the day you're negotiating over 2 - 3k one they get closer? That won't even been a noticeable difference on your paychecks. Less than $100. Just take the offer.

like

Negotiate. They won’t withdraw the offer. They may say close is the best we can do, but then that’s you’re decision to make.

like

Had to take a 20k cut because well unemployment but still got a 5k bump bringing it to a 15k deficit. Have to do whatever to remain in a desirable market.

If you’re an AE, $5k may feel like a lot. Nothing wrong with negotiating. But get ready to accept something perhaps just slightly higher than the verbal. Also consider there are other elements to the offer beyond money.

But avoid dithering around. It’s in everyone’s best interest to get moving. The recruiter will have a range they can say yes to without getting additional approvals.

Also if another candidate slips in who doesn’t require going to the higher ups for a $5k approval they will drop you. I’m going through this right now with a candidate, she doesn’t realize someone else is about to take her slot because they will take what we have budgeted.

Is it bad manners or just a bad idea to go back to a recruiter if they got you a job that wound up being a bad fit?
For context, I don’t think they misled me. The job changed 3 weeks after I got hired, and got stuck in a role that’s just not a good fit. Gave it 6 months of honest effort and I’m ready to start job hunting.
I saw this recruiter make a post on LinkedIn, and I liked working with them the first time, and I want to reach out. But I don’t know what they’ll think.

I spoke with a recruiter recently about a position in her company and before we even began talking about the job, she asked if I needed an sponsorship, I told her no, I dont need one. But she continued to press on the subject until I had to tell her I was a US citizen. I dont know why, but the whole conversation made me extremely uncomfortable. So my question is, can recruiters ask you about your visa/immigration status even when I told her I didnt need a sponsorship??

Cold applied for an awesome role, had an interview with hiring manager, recruiter, and given a pretty hefty assignment that I’m really proud of nailing. They followed up with an email asking for 4-5 days that I am available for a full day of interviews. Gave them 4-5 days, started planning for how I’d get those days off work during insane times at current job, and now not a single word from them to confirm a date. Been over a week now. Sad. Pretty jaded. What can I do? Already followed up

How the market right now? Is it a good time to make a move?

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?

I recently saw a job opening at a company that I really love, and would like to apply. The recruiter has posted it on her Linkedin several times, each time with multiple hashtags about diversity.
