I have a Bachelors in Healthcare Administration. I'm thinking about going back for either a MBA or MHA. Is this worth the time and money? I do have 5 years of healthcare experience and am 27 so I'm still fairly young. Looking to move up quickly though as we are trying to save up for a better house and retirement.

My suggestion will be to go for MBA, as you already have Healthcare Administration bachelors. You will have more opportunities compared to just MHA. Good luck!

Same advice was given to me. I opened for MBA. Best decision!!

Hi there! It sounds like we have somewhat similar paths. I have a Bachelors in Healthcare Administration and MHA as well (I’m 32 now). I was at that same crossroads at that time and if I could go back, I would have gotten an MBA. The reason being an MBA program focuses more on business and strategy skills that you can learn and apply to all industries, not just healthcare. It’ll provide more opportunities (if you decide to expand beyond healthcare one day).

However if you’re dead certain healthcare is your passion and career, an MHA can get you just as far in this field as well. I also agree with the others that reputable programs do matter.

You can also consider adding on certifications or graduate specializations to either. For ex: MBA and a healthcare management certification, MHA and project management certification, etc.

Sorry for the long post! Hope this helps.

Worth getting an MBA or MHA from a reputable program with an alumni network that you can lean on for jobs

like

Either is a good path and I think it likely makes a lot of sense to get that Masters now. You’ll want to do your homework in searching for good programs. I’m biased toward and MHA if you really think healthcare is the path you want to go down as you’ll likely want to make those networking connections early, line up a fellowship, etc. Now if you’re more focused on the business of healthcare in terms of startups, etc, an MBA is a good option. Some schools offer the dual MHA/MBA which can be done in 3 years and that would check both boxes if you’re interested. Good luck with the decision.

like

Both are great options although I personally prefer the MHA if you're focused on the healthcare industry. In my opinion, though, these degrees are less about you learning something new and more about prestige. So go for a degree at a school with some name recognition.

Hey 👋 😌. I would go for a fellowship program after your path that you chose. That's really helpful.

See if you can do a masters in healthcare IT. Its an upcoming field and you get to work from home

I’m 32 and only have one more semester until I receive my MHA. I’m a nursing home administrator. I wish I had pursued an MBA because it’s more broad than MHA. Too late to switch now but just something to consider. You may not always want to work in healthcare!

like

Do you enjoy that role as nursing home admin? That has been my goal and career path since I graduated. I have a BBA in healthcare administration and I have been indecisive about going back for my MBA.

I have my BA in HCA, but switching my MA to IT w/ a Proj Man focus. I want a broader spectrum instead of strictly focusing on HC. After 15 years in HC & my AS & BA in HCA, it I felt like the course work was getting repetitive.

Once that happens my recruiter should send me the offer. Either on the day she comes back, but by the end of the week. I am going stir crazy, I really hate my current job. Help…
