Sometimes the credit will extend if you book and cancel a flight with another form of payment. Check the travel blogs.
This works

I would book a flight you don’t plan to take that’s within the credit window, then cancel that flight a few days later to get another credit. That new credit should have a longer window for use, and you can re-book with the dates you originally wanted.
That wouldn’t work with AA since the fare rules advise travel needs to commence 1 year from the original issue date of the ticket, and they’re trying to use the flight credit for a trip 2 days after the expiration date.
Do the credits not apply to when you purchase the ticket vs when you fly? On delta it’s when you purchase the ticket
That’s ridiculous
You can ask but they will take forever to respond and at the end of the day will probably direct you to another department or just not answer your question. That has been my personal experience
Can you buy the flight for a day within the expiration period and then reschedule the flight

Redeem it now for a flught later on. The redemption has the expiration.
They cant redeem it for a flight later. They’re still subject to the rules of the ticket. They would need to pay a fee to extend it before the expiration date of the flight credit which is the original issue date when they booked it. They need to call back before the ticket expires to extend it so the credit doesnt lose value.
Hi! I work in travel. If you call, you can extend it, but there is a fee to extend with AA.
@ OP… When was travel initially booked? With AA, if you want to extend the credit beyond the expiration date, you need to do it before the expiration of the ticket which is the day it was issued otherwise the credit loses value. Usually the fee can be about $100??? The fee may have changed though.

I would just try again with another rep and see what happens.
I haven’t tried on AA, but Jetblue has a one-time courtesy extension. They even gave me back credits that had already expired by a week (because I was dumb and didn’t check my credits for a long time). I just did it over virtual chat
