Order a double IPA (before anyone else has a chance to order) while staring your potential boss dead in the eyes, and then a round of shots for the table. That's when you find out if it's a "culture fit" as they say
Assert dominance. That is the point of this right?
Don’t order a burger or anything you would eat with your hands. Pick something in the middle in terms of price points, like a risotto (they will pick up the bill but you don’t want to make THAT impression). Look up the restaurant and look at the menu in advance to make a chouce but never admit you did. Be prepared to discuss favorite cuisines and dishes. Take cues from others, ask what they recommend. Look up table manners, know what to do with the napkins, the utensils, the glasses, and when. Be super careful about spills and stains, especially around others. Don’t eat when it’s your turn to talk. Remember about follow up notes afterwards.
@Ogilvy 1 completely agree here. My parents were blue collar folks. Olive Garden was a special dinner for us. The first time I had a meal with some of the higher brass at my agency while on a pitch I was so nervous. The imposter syndrome really is real.
My guess is that it's a chance to get to know you in a less formal setting, though part of it may be a calculated opportunity to see how you handle lunches. In some positions having lunch can be part of the job. I suppose the best approach is to be personable and show your good table manners and make pleasant conversation at the lunch table. Have fun with it, but be aware that it's all a test.
Definitely feels like a personality test and to get me to let my guard down a bit.
